Penney's Pizza: The Radiation Must Be Messing With People's Taste Buds

Penney's Pizza, run out of a house on Ridge Pike in Royersford. I have heard massive amounts of great reviews, and since I was finally back in my home town, I decided it was a good idea to order it when I got the chance.

Well as you can tell, these look a little funny...
Plain:
Cheese first, then a slather of sauce. The sauce was overly sweet and there was way too much of it. Like tomato soup with a nice douse of sugar. The cheese was rubbery and flavorless. Maybe they put the sauce on top to hide the sad excuse they would call "cheese". The crust was also tasteless, neither crunchy nor doughy or chewy. It had the consistency of a microwaved pretzel.
They used corn meal to dust the bottom of the dough which neither helped nor hurt the texture, my taste buds were annoyed.
Price: $12.00 for a large

White:
 This was a little more successful. They put ricotta cheese on first then mozzarella with a sprinkle of herbs. Perhaps a bit too much ricotta, after 1 slice I felt a sort of heaviness only a packet of laxatives and some prune juice could get rid of.
Price: $8.00 for a small

Corn Meal up Skirt

Verdict: One thing that struck me as odd was the fact the the pizzas fell apart.This could only happen from under cooking. I don't really understand why people of Limerick PA go crazy over this stuff, perhaps its the nuclear radiation? The place is always packed with cars picking up pizzas, I just don't get it. Maybe New York has spoiled me, but no way in hell would I ever get these again

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts: Fried Ringlets from Heaven

North Carolina.  Why was I there? Once again I had headed for another crazy road trip with Buddy and his band (The National Rifle) to play a show with Future Islands. I had never been there, so I had know idea what to expect other then southern accents everywhere. 

That night they played, it was an awesome show, however driving 7 hours back to Philly only to take a 1 1/2 hour train back to New York with a 45 minute subway ride with a transfer  to my apartment was not so awesome. I decided I deserved a treat for what was in store ahead of me....

 Behind that shiny glass was fried bliss... Buddy was in a trance

 Our conversation:

Buddy: All I know is that I want a raspberry filled

Me: Okay well I definitely want a glazed and a seasonal one

Buddy: Well I guess we should get a dozen then

Me: YES YES YES YES YES Let's just get a 1/2 dozen.....

Blueberry: Meh, nothing special, the blueberries were dehydrated and covered with way too much sugar. The cake part was moist, but with the sugar on the blueberries and the glaze; it was just way too sweet

Raspberry Filled: Buddy shoved the whole thing down his throat before I could even try a bite ( I had a feeling he did this on purpose...)

Chocolate Cake:  The quickest one to go, I turned my head and it was gone.

Pumpkin: Light and airy, this was better than the blueberry, but the flavors of the spice became  muddled. Dare I say it?....The Dunkin Donut pumpkin doughnut was by far, more satisfying.

Glazed:  Delicious, light and airy like a cloud. Not too big, and the perfect treat. By far my favorite out of them all.
Price: $6.50 for 1/2 dozen

Verdict: The cake doughnuts here were alright, but I'd stick to the classic glazed.... ahh....my mouth is watering as I think about now... And if you are lucky enough to find a krispy kreme that makes the doughnuts right where, then by all means you have the right to pig out!

Twilight Diner: No Vampires Here

Dating a musician has its sacrifices....many, many of them. For example, instead of spending an awesome Friday night in NYC, I am stuck on a chinatown van crammed with valley girl college students for 7 hours in traffic( Yes 7. Left at 4pm, got there at 11) to Penn State to meet him at a show. It was my first time at Penn State, and I can't ever imagine anyone ever wanting to go to school here, it is in the middle of NOWHERE. Anyway, I digress... The day after, we were headed to East Stroudsburg PA for another show and stopped off yet again (can you guess?) in the middle of know where to grab breakfast. Only food place? Twilight Diner.  A single creepy looking restaurant with its only surroundings being the forest.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

Buddy got this, and of course, I stole a bite. It was actually really good! The chicken breast juicy, the lettuce and tomato's fresh. The kaiser roll also tasted fresh baked. Only downer was the the pickles were sweet. Ugh, I hate bread and butter pickles... some things are just not meant to taste sweet.

Not much to report here...like simple home made grilled cheese.

Pizza

Aaron, their manager got this. It looks like an neglected child very simple, but he claimed it kicked Pizza Huts ass.  To each his own. I guess the sausage turds are what is really off putting to me.

Turkey Club

Hmm.... somehow I feel like I am the one that picked the tastiest lunch...? I ordered it with sweet potato fries. My club was actually delicious. Ample bacon, fresh turkey and perfectly portioned. The sweet potato fries were actually some of the best I've ever had! They were crisp flavorful and hit the spot.

Teaberry Ice Cream

They also had a bunch of Hershey's ice cream flavors on their dessert menu. Never one to pass up dessert, (or ice cream for that matter) I went with Teaberry. It was okay, great as a gum flavor, a bit too much as an ice cream flavor

Price: Free! Waitresses treat

I hope the waitress appreciates our present.  I always wished that people left me food art when I used to wait tables.

Verdict: This place might be in the middle of know where, but is fresh, fast, and cheap! I guess a good thing about going on the road is finding all these little fun places to eat. Next time any of you happen to find yourself outside of Happy Valley and are starving and on the road (hey never say never) This place will fill your stomach, but not empty your wallet.
