Baoguette: Why Do I Keep Torturing Myself with Spicy Food?

I recently got a deal on Dealist for $7.00 for any two 2/3 sandwiches at Baoguette. Since I already had  their classic bahn mi, this was the perfect opportunity to try the other sandwichs they had to offer!
Spring Roll
I went with Melissa, and Nikoma and she ordered this as an appetizer. It was filled with pork and seriously looked like a turd. Fortunately, it did not taste like it. It was super crispy, though the meat was a little tough and a bit too oily,  it was still satisfying. It  could easily replace a meal for someone who is not too hungry.
Price:  $4.00

Aww how cute! A turd wrapped in a lettuce blanket.

Veguette
For my first sandwich, I decided to go with the veguette. This was made with  kung pao soy protein, daikon, cucumbers, and cilantro. I told the waitress that I wanted it extra spicy since last time, it wasn't spicy enough. BAD idea. They added, sriracha sauce and jalapeño  (which I could take), but they ALSO added those little green chiles. It was all nicely chopped up so it could hide in every nook and cranny waiting to attack my tongue with their spicy seeds. My eyes were watering by the 3rd bite. I don't know what happened to me, I used to be so good with spicy foods, but now it just  seems as if my tolerance abandoned me.
The soy protein however, was actually very well marinated, tender and fun to eat. None of that rubbery silliness happening here.

The Catfish
This was made with fried catfish, pickled red onion, cucumber relish, and honey mustard sauce and it was  my favorite out of the two. The catfish was perfectly cooked,  light and flaky. It had a  nice crunch that came from the crust of the fish. Though towards the end of the sandwich, the textures ended up being mushy (with the help of the onions and honey mustard sauce).  The sauce was just a tad tart, and didn't overwhelm the other flavors, and I learned my lesson from last time and took all the chiles out before eating this one.
Price: Both sandwich normal price are $7.00

Dinner: Baoguette

Hello everyone! Welcome back from memorial break, hope you enjoyed  the long weekend as much as I have! Now it is back to more food and yumminess!
So the Thursday before the long weekend a friend and I decided to grab some food before I headed back to Pa to visit the family. We wanted something cheap, filling and guaranteed delicious... Vietnamese hoagies? Why not?

Outside
The Classic
Melissa got this, the baguette was stuffed with pork, terrine, pate, cilantro, and pickled carrots and daikon. It is their staple; filling and delicious. ( This was a quick bite past entry, but I had to take a better picture of it!)
Price: $6.00
Green Papaya Salad
This was made with shrimp, mint, lime fish sauce, crushed peanuts. I got excited when I saw the large shrimps, but soon realized they were cut in half (see above image) :(  I only counted 3 whole shrimps in my whole dish.  The carrots and daikon were crunchy and fresh, the sauce was tart, tangy and sweet all at once.  I hardly ever order green papaya salads, and now I remember why. After eating a bunch of shredded veggies, the flavor and texture get repetitive and I felt like I was rabbit. I wish they had sprinkled a little more peanuts into the dish to make it a tad more exciting.
Price: $7.00
Pandan Ice Cream Cone
Time for dessert! We usually go else where to get our sweet fix, but it started raining and neither of us wanted to walk around in the rain to find something. Plus, an ice cream cone of 2 dollars?! What a steal in NYC!
This is named after a fruit that is supposed to have a citrus-y, piney taste to it. However, this  tasted exactly like a vanilla wafer and the rice krispies sprinkled on top reinforced the wafer like taste. The ice cream itself was creamy, slightly thick, and overall a satisfying end to a meal. I would definitely get this ice cream cone again (I liked how the color matched my nails!)
Price: $2.00
Verdict: I like this Baoguette better than the rest, since it has tables and a waiting service ( which is always really friendly and nice). They also are coming out with milkshakes! Black sesame, toasted sesame, chocolate, vanilla, and mixed. I am pretty excited about that and will report back when I have tried them!

Quick Bite: Baoguette

Once in a while, my Philadelphia University friends and I like to meet after work to chit chat, catch up on our life events and grab a quick bite. Since it was so nice out, we decided to pick up some Bánh mì (sometimes referred to as a "Saigon Sub") and sit out at Madison Square park.

Bánh Mì (Baoguette)
Taste: It comes with Pate, Terrine, PorkRoll, Char Siu Pork, pickled carrots, cilantro, and hiracha sauce. All of these flavors came together nicely. The saltiness of the pork, the sweet/ tartness of the carrots and the spice from the hiracha was very satisfying for all my flavor taste-buds.
Texture: Great roll, crunchy outside, airy soft inside. The cilantro added a nice leafy crispness, as well as the carrots. The pate gave it the creamy texture it needed.
Price: $6.00
Verdict: I have been to Baoguette multiple times, and since then they have added more vegetarian options which I am eager to try. Their n Chicken (noodles with lemongrass) is great and they give you plenty of meat. Their location in Astor Place has more sitting room and a waiter service, which is friendly and efficient. I will definitely be back to try out their soy protein options.
